two things to discuss

Hi. Subjects of this message:
1. the annual meeting & the postcards that some of us have received
2. the resolutions
1. The meeting is at Panera North Hills March 6, 6:30. There is a bit of subtext to that story. Some or all of us have gotten the blue postcards from the county party about the meeting at the Fairgrounds. WE (01-15) ARE NOT MEETING THERE. I've told admin@wakedems.org (twice) that we're meeting at Panera, and though I have not had a response from them & they have not posted our meeting on the website I am opining that our meeting will be as they say "legal." Admin will be getting this email, so another opportunity for them to publish our meeting time/place.
(BTW, I am in Kerr-Scott pavilion several times per year. Noisy.)
Panera North Hills March 6, 6:30.
2. The mention of the 3 resolutions in last email drew no responses whatsoever. Therefore, if the people who wanted to submit those resolutions still want to go ahead and put your resolution in resolution form (whereas this and that etc, therefore be it resolved that whatever) and get them back to me in, say, 3 days so I can put them out in another email for comment before our meeting.
Then there was my "corporations are not people" resolution that got two (2) yes comments and no no comments so it is ready to go and we'll vote on it at the meeting.
More soon.

results of meeting 2/19/2012

Hi. 4 people were at the meeting at Panera North Hills 2/19/11. This is what we did:
1. We decided that the annual meeting will be Tuesday, Mar. 6, Panera North Hills, 6:30 PM. This is the meeting at which we elect officers, we need a quorum of 5 registered voters in the precinct, so be there please. If we're efficient we can get everything done in less than 1/2 hour.
2. Resolutions: resolutions are submitted to the county party resolutions committee for "processing" and some may go on to the various conventions for consideration. The successful resolutions become part of the state party platform. We thought we liked the idea of resolutions on the following subjects:
a. pro-medical marijuana
b. that the next reapportionment in 2020 should be done by a non-partisan commission
c. that the NCDP should officially oppose the constitutional amendment about marriage
d. that policies should be arranged to ensure that all schools in NC can have less than 40% free/subsidized lunch students
Please comment on any/all of these by, oh, Mar 1 so we can make a final decision what to do about these, write them up, submit them after the Mar. 6 meeting. I will publish our proceedings as they come in. Also if you have other items you are interested in submitting resolutions on.
3. We decided that we will be doing 2 mailings in the precinct in advance of the May 8 primary as our main/only precinct activity. One mailing will be to the precinct Dems, the other to the precinct unaffiliateds. The Dem mailer will have the sample ballot like we did last year. The unafil mailer will announce that unafils can vote in this May 8 election on the constitutional amendment. Both will have info on early & absentee voting. Cost of each mailer will be ~$130, we decided we can afford it ourselves (the 4 of us at the meeting) but of course y'all are welcome to contribute & that would be nice it you do. 01-37 - let us know if you want to participate in these mailers.
4. We decided that the 01-15 precinct organization will actively work on the defeat of the constitional amendment proposal. There are these yard signs available, I'll send a picture next time. The signs come from Greensboro & cost $5.00 each. We will be arranging a bulk buy (50 min). If you want one/+ let me know.
Also, I'd like to get more precinct Dems on this email list. Y'all got Dem friends in the precinct? Ask them please if they get these emails, if not get them to give you their email addresses, pass them on to me. Thanks.
All for now. I'll be communicating more frequently as the year goes on.
This posted on the facebook page and sent to the email listserve.

2012 things to do

Hi.  Things are starting to take shape.  Let's get started.

Items in this message:
1. goals & methods
2. schedules

People who are reading this are to some extent interested in politics, the question is always what if anything do I want to do.  I have decided that voting, lobbying, and contributing to electoral campaigns are the main things I want to concentrate political time on rather than mouthing off, complaining, grumbling, or congregating with little nutjob organizations that can't get anything done besides irritate people and make small time trouble.

I put about 100 hours per year into trying to get more of the registered Dems in my precinct to vote than otherwise might have if no one was bugging them to vote vote vote.  All us politicals are trying to figure out how to get to the third of us who are independents who go "Eew, gross" about both of the major parties.  Statistically the best method seems to be to rile up the rileable ones with stupid negative ads.

I'm more interested in call-a-spade-a-spade kinds of arguments in political discussion, plenty of internal housekeeping and reform to be done in all political organizations.  I guess I just don't have a sense of humor about it.  Politicians find themselves forced to talk more and think less.  Then they are always trying to cover themselves.  Not edifying.

But if I don't try to do something about it other people will do it and of course they won't do it they I want it done.

So, there is the activity aspect: volunteering time for political work.  Then there is lobbying.  Anyone can lobby.  If I don't have money to hire someone to be a pest for me I can do it myself.  If I send a letter to an elected official about an issue the staff of that elected official (up to congressperson & state senator) will read it.  If I write 10 different interesting letters on that topic the staff will know me, at some point in that letter-writing process I'll probably be passed to the boss.  If I get a bunch of my friends and allies (those are people I work with on something who are not my friends) to write letterS the elected official will start to wonder if there is a constituency for that position.  If people bring up the issue in public face-to-face, make phone calls, DONATE, the issue of interest automatically becomes more interesting to the elected official.  Zillionaires hire people to do this for them.  Us little guys have to do it ourselves, which we are allowed to do in this country.  But we have to do it because we don't have money to hire people.

Donation: my people might be big disappointments but the the bigger picture must be always kept in mind.  I spend some of my money on political activity.  I have a budget, put the money where I want it do go, they can't get any more money out of me no matter how much they beg.  Where do I donate?  This year I will give money to the Wake Co. Dem. Party, all of my local candidates, probably I will throw a bit at the anti-amendment campaign, the presidential campaign, and perhaps a smattering to out of area candidates.  Anytime I donate and then later perhaps have something I want to discuss with them I can always start my letter: "Hi, I donated."  They're not going to be "swayed," but they read what I wrote.

That's how I do it.  Y'all do whatever you want.

Now: schedule:

1. Pre-annual meeting meeting - this to discuss if we want to submit any proposals for the platform at the state party convention (NOT the national convention in Charlotte).  We can also discuss how we are going to deal with the sustaining fund assessment that Wakedems will show us at the annual meeting.  And of course we can start to discuss how we will proceed with our electioneering and election activities, now that, for instance, we know for sure that the primary will be in May.  So I'd like to propose that we have this pre-meeting meeting around 2-3rd week February so that if we do do proposal(s) we can attempt an email or facebook page discussion before we pass them on.  I can't do Mon & Wed nights, any other time OK.  Who has a preferred time, date & place?  Who has forbidden times/dates?  I would like to set the date of this meeting by 1/30/12.  Feedback please.  OK?
Oh, 01-37, you can come to our (01-15) meeting or have your own.

2. The annual meeting March 6.  Quorum of 5 people needed.  More is more "democratic."  Elect precinct officers, deal with the sustaining fund, watch a couple of local pols give rahrah speeches, probably Grier Martin will show up.  We are apparently up to 4 including me promising to attend.  I never believe in these pledges to show up, we do or we don't.  Please consider attending, especially if you've never been to one.  Perhaps too you are finding me tiresome and would like to boot me, just show up with 5 of your friends and vote me out.

3. The primary: there actually will be a Dem primary: all local candidates.  It will be important to get these candidates sorted out.  And then also the amendment.  I am thinking informational mailer: basic candidate info (their website address, etc.), something about the amendment.  Get that out timed so that it can also have absentee and early voting information.  Are we in the precinct going to try to do any voter registration? Probably not.  I think the Obama org. is doing that: 919-821-4875.  I think we have people in this precinct who will be organizing against the amendment, I can perhaps put you in touch if you're interested in that.

4. Get to the rest of the year later.

5. One of us volunteered to create a precinct facebook page.  Supposed to happen "next week."

silly season all year long

Why I do what I do politically & why I plan to continue to do it

I'm trying to remember when I first thought that things were arranged unfairly.  It was very early.  Kindergarten maybe.  That was the first time I remember being ranked.  In retrospect it seems that during those various rankings that occurred in that class I noticed people getting ranks they didn't deserve and not getting ranks they should have.  Unfairness was everywhere.

My initial training was that there was nothing you could do about "the way things were," you had no choice but to go along with it.  The 60s changed that mental stasis.  I ("we") realized (quickly) that change could be imagined, things could be done to promote those imaginations.  Various ways were looked at.

I have come to be a big fan of voting as a way of deciding things.  A lot of us don't want to bother that day, let alone do research to find out, and most of those candidates are mediocre at best, fools, gold diggers, paid hacks, etc.  But any other method of deploying power involves the arbitrary use of force by unaccountable people.  I want to be able to participate in the deployment of power.  Voting, to the extent it is "real," is the alternative to, essentially, gang warfare, in which weapons holders fight until someone dominates.

The ongoing issue is to make voting "real," in the various ways that can be defined.  The votes are really counted, the candidates are for positions that mean something, they are not themselves feckless, people who are eligible to vote are allowed to vote, people actually want to vote, etc.

Beyond that concern with the integrity of the voting process are my positions on "issues."  Because my views are what they are there are no Republicans anywhere that I can support at this time.  35 years ago there were times when I could have strategically supported a particular Republican here or there (Hatfield) but now they don't even speak the same language as me even though they use the same words.

Democrats are not a perfect fit for me either.  Disappointing in many ways.  But 2 things: 1. there is some congruence of belief, 2. there are only 2 parties in this country (despite the fact that getting toward 1/3 of the voters are now registered "independent" which means "no party.")  Maybe all those non-Dem-non-Rep voters should form the "Independent" party.  Anyway, for me there really is a difference between Dems and Reps, even if only at the edges.  The delirious flow of great rivers of money rushes on in the same unfair, sociopathic, oligarchic direction no matter, apparently, who's in charge.

I want to support the electoral process & I want to push the political scene in a certain direction not-the-direction-that-the-Republicans-are pushing.  The Democrats are pushing less in that direction.  I am a strong supporter of the lesser evil.  I work, therefore with the Dems.

why work with dems

Why I am voting Dem and working to build the Dem party

The work I do requires study of history, so I see things in current events that remind me of things that have happened before. I'm older than some people too, so I've seen things with my own eyes. I can see, for instance, the ways Obama seems something like Carter. It would be pleasant, from my point of view, to have a robust and articulate left constituency in this country but we don't. The left is factionalized almost down to isolated individuals here these days, arguing about how to move the masses for what purpose. What we have is a weak and inarticulate center and an insurgent right wing.

In my opinion the goal of the right wing everywhere is to allow people to take advantage of other people for economic gain without limit. It wants to create a society in which people can treat other people however they want if they can afford to, the done to have to put up with it, that is their right wing fate. The left wants everyone to be fair & wants to set up a system that forces people to be good to each other.   But there is no known method of getting people to be "good" that works all the time, is there?

Historically, almost of all of human history everywhere has been right wing, only very rarely did some kind of broad power sharing culture develop. In those erstwhile egalitarian cultures right wing tendencies, being in a sense "primitive" or "natural," emerged naturally as capital accumulated to certain people & not others & the holders of the capital tried to hold on to it for themselves, neighbors can fend for themselves. Rich don't want to take the poor into their families, certainly not all of them. They'd prefer to employ them for somewhat less than they're worth.

Here in USA we have Dems & Reps, the Libs & Greens just don't count. I look at the Reps & I see people who front for people who want to take things without limit. They call that privatization. Their goal is to allow people with money to do whatever they want. Their policies are designed to keep people who aren't them from getting in their way. The more poor people the better from their point of view, they'll work for less.

Me being egalitarian there is no way I could vote Rep now.

But the Dems are such undisciplined petty wooses what am I going to do?

I remember school getting to be 50 years ago. The jocks - bullies among them, using most of the yard, on the edge the nerds, geeks, misfits, geniuses among them, united by their non-jockness, can't we all be friends. Well, no, said some of the jocks, you're not good enough.

Faced with that kind of desire to exclude I eventually found myself compelled to do political work, which for me is about getting people to think about things & to decide that they will try to do something about what they care about, I eventually ended up with the Dems because realistically they are all that stands between me & my kind of people & right wingers who want to take my stuff away from me. If there was a lefter party that amounted to anything I would be there but there isn't. None of them have the organizing principles required. Get a good organization eventually an electable candidate will come along. Dem organization isn't really great by and large, though they sure did the job in 2008, but this is what there is to work with.

For me disappointment with the way things are going is irrelevant. I expect to fail, am happy when anything good happens. I want to keep trying for fairness. I know from experience that the people I want to win will probably disappoint me, but I know that the alternative is worse so I am involved and do things.

I have something in common with the right wingers: I think I know what's correct, I share with all activists a tendency to act.  It makes me feel good when I do something.  But I have moved beyond any consideration of success or failure of any goal I might have.  I do these things because I think they are good things to do.  It doesn't bother me that history is going wrong (=not the way I want it to go) but it always goes wrong.  I want to do the right thing so that's what I do.  What's the right thing?  What I think it is of course.

Politics is the alternative to rule of force.  It is a lot of boring meetings, bad compromises, disappointment, half-measures, cronyism, nepotism, good tasting bad food, mistakes, fixed deals, money money money.  If we don't participate in that stuff it happens without us & eventually the henhouse gets taken over by the foxes.  I hate meetings but I go to a few of them.  If we all went to a few of them things would be different.  Few people always run those meetings.  Why?  No one else wants to.  That is actual political power.

I plan and schedule my political work.  I don't take on more than I can do.  Political work like doing dishes - must be done.  Doing laundry.  An amount of volunteer work, a donation budget, a committment to send some emails to some elected officials.  Demos and parties & rallies are fun but the other things are what makes stuff happen.  I started small, kept doing it.  Doesn't matter if we win or lose cause I know what's the right thing to do and that's more important than who wins.  All candidates are defective, everything is.  But there is always the right thing to do.

Personal view of October 2011 election, Wake County, North Carolina, USA

This will be a set of reasons why its important to vote in this upcoming election and why it is important to vote Dem.  Of course this is my opinion.  You will do whatever you decide to do or not do.  I consider it highly unlikely that anyone reading this might be disinclined to vote, but perhaps there are undecideds or disenchanteds among the potential readership, or maybe I'll produce a useful turn of phrase that can be used by someone to try to convince someone else to vote who otherwise might go out for a burger with that time instead.

This is a local election for school board, mayor, city council.  The current school board majority got itself elected with a big push in a small election.  Total turnout for the county was about 11% that year, they didn't sweep to power, rather they got modest majorities, a bit over 5% of the registered voters.  No one knows what kind of turnout there will be this time, but I bet you it won't be any 70% like it was in 2008.  Perhaps the right wingers will turn out in droves and the Dems will be weak and they will stomp us good, or perhaps Dems will be riled up too and there'll be a 40% turnout, or maybe more likely it won't quite get to 20%.  If that is the case then truly every vote will count, the winners will win by a few thousand votes.

This is our regional school board candidate too.  It is personal therefore.  If you think what's been happening at the school board is worse than what went on before it is important to try to defeat their candidate.

Unfortunately there are two non-Ripublican candidates, an instance of party lack of discipline.  The Rips do it too but it is deplorable.  The two Dems: one is a little firebrandish, the other one is nicer-ish, I would vote for either of them if they were the only one, but no, so I'm going to vote for the nice one because that one has more political oomph, much as i appreciate the positions of the other one.  For strategic reasons I will usually go with the moderate, they can more easily be elected.  Kushner.

From my point of view Rips at every level have created mischief everywhere that they have taken power.  There used to be good government Rips but now all they want to do is privatize.  We may not have much input at the national level, or maybe even the state, (though a Wake County win usually carries the state), but we always have a chance of winning in the county and the city and the school board.

Did I convince you to vote?

proposed voter info flyer

This is a first attempt at the letter to be sent to the precinct. Please comment on it for the next 48 hours, I'll reedit & post again for comment, then I'll print & mail it.

Chris Telesca, up the Dem line, told me 3 mailings are the minimum necessary to get a response, what does that have to do with us in the precinct? Where's the money? I figure the more or less end of voter registration by mail is Sep. 25 so let's just get it out there a week before that. Now to prepare the mailing list. That means finding the people living at the same address & creating a single label for them to save postage. Perhaps as many as 30% are couples, etc. Maybe 1-2h of work. Someone do it for me in next 48h? 72? By next Monday.

I am going to try to disclipine myself enough to post this on the precinct blog, at which comments on the flyer (and other subjects) can be easily made. http://pct0115jokes.blogspot.com/

Is it time to start exhorting? Do you need me to yell & scream about how serious this election is and how much is at stake? Let me know, I will.
